Biography - Part 1

Jason Nelson is not the typical country music singer from Texas. In fact, he is not even a native Texan. "Most people don't believe me when I tell them I was born in Alton, Illinois. I guess I picked up the southern accent after living here for 21 years. My wife, Misty, still teases me about being a yankee," Jason says. Yankee or not, Jason has come to love the great state of Texas and the sound of country music.

At age 25, Jason still remembers the early years he spent on the farm in Bethalto, Illinois. "My dad has always been a hard working man, and he always had a love for horses. I only lived on that farm for four years, but I planted my roots out in the country. My parents have instilled those strong values and work ethic in me ever since." In 1981, Jason moved to Houston, Texas. This was about the time that George Strait released his first album, "Strait Country." "I remember my parents telling me a story about Bohicky's in Alvin. They had the opportunity to see George Strait perform at Bohicky's for a ticket price of $6! At the time, no one knew of George Strait, and my dad was (and still is) such a tight wad that he did not want to shell out the $6 to see a no-name country music singer. Of course, the rest is history."

Speaking of history, Jason recalls his days at Clear Brook High School. "I remember always being the very shy and studious type. I am not sure how my classmates would have classified me. I think some would have classified me as a nerd because I usually made excellent grades, but they could also say I was a jock because I played baseball. On another hand, they would have called me a 'kikker' during my later years. " Jason's initial dream was to become a professional baseball player. "I ate and slept baseball from the time I was ten years old until my junior year in high school. After a few years of high school ball, I realized that God did not put me on this earth to play baseball. I figured I better concentrate on making the grade because sports were not in my future." After striking out with baseball, Jason decided to join Future Farmers of America (now the National FFA Organization) his senior year. "I was looking for something that I enjoyed doing as an extracurricular activity. Up to that point, studying and academics consumed most of my spare time." Jason took Agricultural Science courses that sparked an interest that would later influence his decision on a college major. "I really enjoyed learning about the science of agriculture and its application to everyday life. FFA taught me a lot about leadership, and I had the opportunity to work with livestock."
